Course Description : Fundamentals of Education explores the core principles of education, focusing on its historical, philosophical, and sociological foundations. The course covers the role of education in society, including educational theories, systems, and practices. Students will study the aims of education, curriculum development, and teaching methods, as well as the role of the teacher. It also examines the relationship between education, culture, and social change, and introduces contemporary educational challenges and policies shaping modern education.

Course Objective : This module aims to impart the basic management knowledge, and skills to the students so as to enhance their managerial capabilities and enable them to apply in the practical field

Course Contents:

Unit 1. EDUCATION AS A DISCIPLINE 3 Hrs.

Meaning of education as a discipline, Characteristics of discipline, Meaning of education, Etymological, Narrow, Broader, Definitions of education, Major forms/types of education, Informal, Formal1.5.3 Non-formal, Nature of education, Direct and indirect, Individual and collective, General and specific.

Unit 2. Approaches to Education 3 Hrs.

Open and distance learning, Concept, Process, Learning materials, Continuing education, Concept, Needs, Skill-based and competency-based approaches to education, Concept, Needs, Classroom implication

Unit 3. Philosophical perspectives on Education 3 Hrs.

Concept, branches and functions of philosophy, Relation between philosophy and education, Schools of philosophy: Philosophical premises, objectives of education, educative process, curriculum, role of teacher and student in: Idealism, Naturalism, Realism, Pragmatism, Implications of schools of philosophy for classroom teachers.

Unit 4. Sociological Perspectives on Education 3 Hrs.

Relation between sociology and education, Socialization as a base: Concept, Modes, Agencies of socialization, Active agencies, Passive agencies, Social interaction: Concept and importance, Implications of sociological bases of education for school.

Unit 5. Educational thought: Concept and Educational Implications 3 Hrs.

Eastern thought, Western thought

Unit 6. Shaping and Reshaping Educational Development in Nepal 3 Hrs.
